ABOUT THE JOB
Use your wine skills to contribute to the exciting recent developments in viticulture and oenology research at NIAB.
We are recruiting a Wine Research Technician to join our busy viticulture and oenology team within the Crop Science and Production Services department to assist with delivering a range of diverse funded vineyard and wine projects. Our research involves collaborations with international research institutes, Universities and businesses providing a unique opportunity for those keen on pursuing a career in UK viticulture and wine science research.
Key duties:
- Ensure laboratory equipment and lab consumable stock levels are maintained cost-effectively.
- Collate and interpret grapevine, juice and wine data and produce reports.
- Statistically analyse vine and wine data.
- Conduct lab and vineyard-based data collection and processing
- Support the viticulture and oenology research team during harvest and at all winemaking stages.
- Contribute to scientific publications and peer reviewed articles.
- Maintain a clean winery and laboratory.
- Provide support to other crop research teams if required.
- Any other duties as required.
Work is split between the vineyard, winery, laboratory and office (bench-and desk-based activities), which varies according to the season.
- Regular travel to our research partners vineyards for weekly data collection leading up to harvest.
- Manual handling of grape crates weighing up to 10kg at harvest.
- Vineyard and winery physical activity – walking, standing, bending and manual handling of items.
- Working outdoors in any weather condition during the grapevine growing season, means exposure to sunlight.
Salary: from £27,562 pro rata per annum (£16,760.68 per annum), depending on skills, qualifications and experience.
Contract: 18-month fixed term
Working hours: 22.5 hours per week over 3 days, Monday to Friday
ABOUT YOU
Essential Requirements:
- BSc in Viticulture and Oenology or related science (e.g. chemistry) or equivalent qualifications/experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good IT skills – email, spreadsheets, document sharing, statistical analysis skills, Microsoft Office 365 applications – Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint.
- Strong numeracy and data management skills.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills (especially in winemaking)
- Wine or beverage production experience.
- Laboratory experience.
- Driving licence or access to independent means of travelling, enabling regular travel to vineyards near to NIAB East Malling.
Desirable Requirements:
- Strong science knowledge.
- Data collection and statistical analysis experience.
- Report writing.

LOCATION
The role is based at East Malling, Kent, ME19 6BJ. East Malling is three miles from junction four of the M20, with plenty of free on-site parking. NIAB East Malling can easily be accessed by the London Victoria to Dover (via Ashford International) rail route via West Malling station. Alternatively, exit the train at the East Malling station and take the short walk onto site.
