Job Title: Winemaker – Renegade Urban Winery, London
Renegade Urban Winery is looking for a super-duper winemaker – could this be you?
Start date – Early 2025
Location – London, E17 (Blackhorse Road Tube Station, Victoria Line)
About Renegade:
Renegade was established in 2016 and is a London based urban winery that makes innovative, distinctive, bold and adventurous wines from both English and European grapes. We make a wide range of wine styles and love to experiment. We currently process between 40 and 80 tons per vintage. The winery is based in Blackhorse Road/Walthamstow, E17 and is in a wonderful community of breweries, distilleries, makers and producers. We sell wine to lots of brilliant restaurants, bars and shops. We also have a bar in Bethnal Green and a bar/kitchen inside the E17 winery. We do events, live music, tours/tastings and tons more! We’re just getting started…
Role:
We are looking for someone who is currently a winemaker (or a strong assistant winemaker looking to step up to their first lead role). Someone passionate about wine and keen to get stuck into making wine in this wonderful city. The ideal candidate will be energetic, positive, professional and a self-starter. You will need to be an active problem solver and a can-do person. We’re a small but growing team and we need someone who can take responsibility for our wines and has the maturity to manage all aspects of winemaking and everything that entails. Reporting to the Founder, we would like the candidate to be confident and measured with a desire to craft interesting, well made, innovative wines.
Sample of Duties:
Winery:
· Oversee and manage all aspects of winemaking from grape receival/logistics all the way to sending wine to our bonded warehouse (with support from team members)
· Harvest work including grape receival, pressing, processing, monitoring, and barrel work
· Postproduction operations, including bottling, packaging and kegging
· Grape and wine analysis (we use an in house QCL lab system)
· Transfers and filtration
· Forklift operation
· Warehouse operations
· Winemaking and other necessary record keeping
· Duty declarations and stock management
· Health and Safety management/compliance
Additional duties:
Due to the fact we are a small business, winemaking is seasonal, we don’t have a vineyard (no winter pruning, spraying or bud rubbing!) and we don’t make huge amounts of wine, we’ll need the candidate to contribute to other aspects of the business. This will depend on any specific skill the candidate may have but may well include sales/marketing, hosting events/tastings and representing the brand.
The right candidate will have a lot/most/all of the following:
· Tertiary qualification in Oenology (BSc, DNO or post-grad equivalent) - Preferred
· Experience as a winemaker (or seasoned assistant winemaker)
· The ability to work and communicate under pressure within a team
· Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
· Problem-solving mindset, with the ability to identify issues, develop solutions, and drive results.
· A passion for wine production
· An open-minded approach to winemaking – we are looking for a technically skilled winemaker but not one who looks at everything through a window of ‘that’s how it’s always been done’ lens – we like thinkers and innovators
· Understanding of viticulture
· Science-led, attention to detail-led approach
· Good literacy and numeracy skills
· At least 3-5 relevant vintage experiences in professional wineries
· An eye for detail, operational effectiveness and efficiency
· An enthusiasm for hands-on winemaking within a friendly and close-knit team
· The ability to lift up to 25kg
· A sense of humour and great personality
· Competent ability on a forklift truck
· The right to work in the UK
· A full UK clean driving license
Renegade can offer:
· A unique opportunity to join a young, innovative urban winery at an early stage
· An opportunity to help create innovative, disruptive and unique wines
· The ability to work with high-quality English and European grapes
· Hands on winemaking
· A friendly, energetic and interesting work environment
· The ability to live and work in London whilst focusing on winemaking
· Working with multiple wine styles
· Creative input into wines, wine styles and other aspects of growth
Salary dependant on experience – but don’t expect big bucks – we’re a small business - there is the scope to earn equity in the business and to shape the future of the brand depending on the candidate...
