Harrow & Hope is a small, family run vineyard and winery producing English Sparkling Wine. The role will be to assist the head winemaker in all aspects of winemaking from grape to bottle. The candidate should be competent in a broad range of winery duties; this is a practical hands on role. The role will be predominantly winery based however the assistant winemaker must be flexible and be ready to assist in the office, vineyard and also greeting customers.
The ideal candidate will be hard-working and flexible as working hours and tasks are variable according to times of the year. Whilst relevant experience is beneficial, personality, enthusiasm, self-motivation and attention to detail are of much greater importance.
Main responsibilities
- Harvest; oversee weigh and maintain press records. Juice analysis, yeast additions, monitor ferments and malolactic ferments.
- Blending, cold stabilisation, filtering and preparation for bottling.
- Ensure the winery and all winemaking and laboratory equipment is cleaned and maintained.
- Manage winery records, stock management and all winemaking administration. Including the riddling and disgorging schedule.
- Barrel husbandry; fermentation, malolactic, maintaining reserve wines.
- Racking and sterilisation.
- Assist riddling and all aspects of disgorging, including liquor preparation.
- Schedule, label and pack finished wine in response to orders.
- Prepare triage samples for regular tasting sessions and dosage trials.
- Perform wine analysis on available lab equipment.
- Assist Vineyard Manager with adhoc tasks, site visits and labour supervision. Vineyard pruning if necessary.
- Prepare and dispatch online wine orders. Order dry goods.
- Greet adhoc customers and visitors and lead small tours and tastings.
- Attend events both on and off site where necessary.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will report to the head winemaker and will have:
- Practical experience in the production of traditional method sparkling wine. Experience in cellarwork, bottling and running disgorging and labelling lines.
- Be an experienced forklift driver.
- Have a winemaking qualification and previous experience as Assistant Winemaker or Cellarhand
- Have a clean driving licence and their own transport.
- Exude a strong team-working ethos, as well as the ability to quickly adapt to new tasks.
- Have strong Excel spread sheet and computer skills
This is a full time role. Salary will be commensurate with previous experience
