A family run boutique wine and spirit producer in Rutland, U.K.  looking for a competent Assistant Winemaker to help with the production of a range of Minimal Intervention still and sparkling wines. Mallard Point is Pioneering Bottle returns in Alternative packing (Aluminium Bottles) and the reuse of grape marc for its award winning Spirits range in the in house Distillery.

Reporting to our Winemaker and Distiller. The successful applicant needs to be experienced in all routine cellar operations, and able to follow detailed instructions and take responsibility. This is a small-scale operation, maximum 40 Tons of fruit, and therefore the job requires very hands on involvement in all aspects of the winery, vineyard, and harvest. We are a small operation and outside of the wine making duties help with the distillery and vineyard operations and / or running tours and tastings would be part of the role.

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Assistance with Prunning (late spring) and tieing down

• Assistance with sampling and lab work

• Set-up, clean down and maintenance of winery equipment

• Fruit receival and press operations

• Transfers, additions, cap management and barrel work

·       Blending trials

·       Paperwork audit of Grapes and Wine in and out of Winery

• Run Bottling line

 

Skills and Qualifications :

• Tertiary qualification in Oenology (BSc, DNO or post-grad equivalent)

• At least two relevant vintage experiences in modern and professional wineries

• Ideally proficient in forklift operations, but not essential

• Solid understanding of cool-climate winemaking

• Physically capable for hands-on winemaking Competencies :

 • Strong and clear communication

• Empathy for and familiarity with high quality wine production

• An eye for detail, operational effectiveness and efficiency

• An enthusiasm for hands-on winemaking within a friendly and close-knit team

An ultimate focus on quality and sustainability is required at the same time.

England is a challenging climate in which to grow grapes, but we have consistently proved it is possible to achieve outstanding results. Salary will depend on experience. A right to work in the UK is required. We cannot offer accommodation but would assist with finding something temporary if the successful applicant needs it.
