The Squerryes Estate first planted vines in 2006 and today we have over 50 acres under vine, growing traditional Champagne varieties of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Our sole focus is on making top quality English Sparkling Wine, having produced a range of single vintage wines that have won multiple gold medals from Decanter WCCSW competitions.
With the development of our new winery this year, we are looking to recruit a permanent Winery and Vineyard Assistant to join us.
We are looking for an individual who can integrate into our hardworking, dedicated and enthusiastic team. This role is ideal for a new graduate who is looking to develop their winemaking and viticultural skills under the tutelage of our Head Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, as your role will be split across both departments throughout the year.
Key responsibilities
Winery
Assisting Head Winemaker with all aspects of winery operations throughout the winemaking year including:
- Winery maintenance, cleaning, and general upkeep
- Forklift operation
- Harvest operations including press harvest analysis, grape receival, pressing, transfers, rackings, inoculations, additions and data keeping
- Wine tasting
- Blending
- Filtration
- Cold Stabilisation
- Tirage operations, including culture establishment, tirage additions, bottling line management, QC analysis and maintenance
Vineyard
Assisting the Vineyard Manager with all aspects of vineyard management through the year. Tasks will include:
- Pesticide spray programme
- Mowing
- Vine canopy trimming
- Trellis maintenance and repair
- Pruning; tying down; bud rubbing; tucking in and shoot selection
- Data gathering and monitoring as part of the Sustainable Wines GB certification
Requirements
- Previous harvest experience would be ideal
- Some winemaking and viticulture education (either WSET or University)
- Key attention to detail
- A competent level of computer literacy
- High degree of literacy and numeracy skills
- Forklift experience, with certification being preferred
- PA1 and PA2 spray qualification and experience preferred
- Someone who is passionate and committed to the Squerryes philosophy
- Be hard working and willing to work extended hours during high workload periods of the year
- Ability to lift 25kg
- A level of fitness to be able to work on your feet for the entire day
- Over 18 years of age
- Eligible to work in the UK
