About us
York Wines is located in Sheriff Hutton, 10 miles north of York and has been trading for over 35 years. During this time, the business has grown into the busy importing, wholesale and retail business it is today. We have at least two vans out on the road most days, delivering to approximately 250 wholesale customers across a 50 mile radius. We also deliver wine to approximately 100 private retail customers a week, both across the UK via our third party courier partners, and more locally, delivered by our own drivers. Our office hours are 08:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday and 10:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays. Our physical shop is open for 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays.
The Role
This newly created position will enable the right candidate to learn about and be involved in all aspects of the business. The primary focus of the role is to develop and grow the retail arm of the business through both the physical and online shops.
Hours
- This is a full time to position to include at least two Saturdays a month (a weekday off in the week when a Saturday is worked)
- There will be occasional evening and weekend events
Core Responsibilities
- Increase retail sales
- Managing the day to day running of the physical shop
- Promoting new wines to retail customers through the website, emails, social media and events
- Managing stock levels and updating and feeding information into our software system and website
- Establishing and running a loyalty / subscription scheme for retail customers
- Organising, promoting and running tasting / meet the producer events for both retail and wholesale customers
- Liaising with producers and suppliers
- Tasting wines with a view to identifying new wines to list

The right candidate must:
- Have experience of working in the wine industry or a hospitality role where knowledge of wine was a key part of the role
- Be positive, personable, enthusiastic, proactive and practical, be able to multitask, have great attention to detail and not be afraid of hard work
- Be educated to degree level or equivalent
- Hold WSET level 2 or 3 or have the equivalent experience
- Have experience in a customer facing environment
- Have the ability to advise customers on their wine purchases
- Have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team, get on with people and deal with customers in a polite and professional manner
- There are physically demanding aspects of the job – unloading deliveries, loading vans, making up orders and delivering wine – cases can be up to 15KG – so the ability to cope with this is absolutely essential.
